Heterodon nasicus ja zvrastovo malý druh hada pochádzajúci z USA. Zvyčajná dĺžka v dospelosti je 70 - 80 cm pričom samice sú podstatne väčšie a predovšetkým mohutnejšie. jedná sa o zemný druh hada ktorý sa dokonca rád zahrabáva. Tomuto je nutne prispôsobiť terárium v ktorom ich chováme. Miska na vodu je samozrejme nevyhnutnosťou. Pre naše zvieratá používame ako substrát vrstvu píniovej kôry.

Povahovo sa jedná o malé kobry. Vzrastovo malé hadíky sa s obľubou nafukujú, hlasno syčia a robia fingované výpady avšak so zavretou tlamou teda su uplne neškodné. Ďalším obranným mechanizmom je har na mŕtveho keď sa had otočí na chrbát, otvorí ústa a dokonca vyplazí jazyk. Manipulácia s nimi je veľmi jednoduchá ak si človek zachová chladnú hlavu a nezľakne sa zastrašovacích metód. Je nutné pripomenúť že Heterodony majú zadné jedové zubya preto je na mieste istý stupeň opatrnosti, toto je potrebné predovšetkým v čase kŕmenia. Doposiaľ zdokumentované prípady uhryznutia týmto hadom boli všetky v súvislosti s kŕmením keď si had pomýlil prst chovateľa s krmivom.

Naše hady kŕmime holíčatami myší. Niektoré jedince si vyžadujú živé krmivo iné prijímajú aj mreazené. Celkovo sa však jedná o bezproblémových jedákov. Samice po zazimovaní a párení kladú vajcia z ktorých sa neskôr liahnu mláďatá.

Vsúčastnosti existuje už množstvo farebných mutácií ktoré sa tešia veľkej obľube a prispievajú k ďalšiemu rozširovaniu tohto druhu v chovoch.

Pre Heterodon nasicus platí, čo je malé je aj milé. Sú to veľmi zaujímavé a nádherné hady a to v akejkoľvek z mutácií. Správaním sa radia skôr k nervóznejším druhom nie sú však agresívne a manipulácia s nimi je jednoduchá. Čo môže ľudí trochu odradzovať je ich mierna jedovatosť.

heterodon nasicus is a smaller snake which comes from the USA. The ussual lenght in adutlhood is approximately 70 - 80 cm. The females are bigger and more buff then the males. They are ground dwelling snakes which enjoy to burrow as well. It is important that you provide a terrarium which fulfills their needs. A water bowl is always necessary. Our animals are being kept on pine wood chips.

In regard of their behaviour, they are small cobras. These small snakes love to puff and huff, make loud hissing sounds and make fake attacks with a closed mouth, so thei are totaly undangerous. An additional defence mechanism is playing dead when the snake turns on it's back, opens the mouth and even the thoung is out. The handling is very easy when we keep our cool and don't freak out about the threatening actions. Still it is important to point out that heterodon have back venom teeth and therefore some caution is apropriate especialy during feeding time. All documented bites from this species have occured during feeding when the snake has mistaken the finger of it's keeper for a feeding item.

We feed our snakes with pinky mice. Some require live food some accept also frozen. In general they are not hard to get feeding. The females after being hybernated and after mating lay eggs from which the babies hatch.

There are miltuple color morphs available, all are very popular and contribute to a even further spreading of the species in snake collections.

For Heterodon nasicus the statement "what is small, is cute" absolutely valid. They are very interesting and more then beautiful snakes in every of their morphs. considering their behaviour they are rather nervous but not agresive and the handling is really easy. What could be a show stopper for some people is their mild venom.
