Boa constrictor patrí medzi väčšie hady, ktoré sa objavujú aj v súkromných chovoch. Pochádzajú z Ameriky, kde ich rozšírenie siaha od juhu Severnej Ameriky cez Južnú Ameriku až po niektoré Karibské ostrovy. Podľa lokality odkiaľ had pochádza sa líšia v sfarbení a vo veľkosti, do ktorej dorastú. Finálna veľkosť samozrejme ešte záleží aj od množstva ponúkaného krmiva a z časti aj od toho či sa jedná o samca alebo o samicu, samice spravidla bývajú väčšie. Veľkosť dospelých jedincov sa pohybuje medzi dvoma až štyroma metrami. Táto veľkosť zároveň znamená, že si je potrebné ešte pred zakúpením dobre rozmyslieť či butete schopný poskytnúť takémuto veľkému zvieraťu potrebnú starostlivosť či už vo forme dostatočne rozmerného terária a v neposlednom rade aj vo forme dostatku vhodnej potravy. Tieto hady sú veľmi žravé a už ako mláďatá su schopné prijímať ako potravu dospelé myši, neskôr potkany a dokonca dospelé zajace. Kvôli ich tendencii k obezite je potrebné ich kŕmiť rozumne a neprekrmovať.
Prirodzené sfarbenie je základná šedá alebo hnedastá s množstvom hranatých vzorov na chrbte hada a výrazne vzorovaným chvostom kde farby prechádzajú až do červenkastých odtieňov. Opäť pripomíname že tieto hady sú farebne veľmi variabilné a lokalita od lokality sa líši. V chovoch sa zároveň okrem zvierat s bežným prírodným sfarbením obajvujú aj takzvané "farbičky". Jedná sa o zvieratá šľachtené na základe genetickej predispozície pre konkrétne sfarbenie. Takto sa v chovoch objavujú albíny, motley, pastel, salmon, jungle, sunset, anery, stripe, arabesque, panther, supervarianty týchto foriem, ich kombinácie a nové stále pribúdajú, takýmto príkladom je napríklad forma midnight gin, ktorú vyprodukovala firma VPI. Dá sa povedať, že v tomto smere sa fantázii medze nekladú. Je samozrejme vecou preferencie, či uprednostníte prírodné alebo farbičkové hady, ktoré sú spravidla podstatne drahšie.
Čo sa týka povahy, je ťažké dať nejaké všeobecné zaradenie. Preto radšej popíšeme naše skúsenosti s našimi konkrétnymi zvieratami. Všetky Boa constrictor, ktoré sú v našom chove sú pokojné a dá sa s nimi bez akýchkoľvel problémov manipulovať, čo je veľkým prínosom predovšetkým pri čistení terárií. Jedinú výnimku v pokojne idylke predstavuje čas kŕmenia. Keď sa krmné zvieratá nachádzajú v miestnosti s hadmi všetky hady ich okamžite zacítia a v tomto čase je nutné otvárať teráriá opatrne keďže hady útočia takmer na všetko čo sa v ich blízkosti pohne a neváhajú útočiť ani spôsobom keď had vystrelí až von z terária. Kŕmte preto opatrne a nepodceňujte ich rýchlosť a obratnosť. My naše hady kŕmime raz týždeňne.
Tieto hady patria k živorodým hadom, čo znamená, že samica porodí živé mláďatá a teda celý proces inkubácie vajec prebehne priamo v tele zvieraťa. Párenie prebieha po niekoľko týždňov kedy hady trávia celý čas spoločne. Gravidita trvá približne 100 - 120 dní, následne samica porodí v priemere 50 mláďat. Mláďatá je možné chovať jednotlivo alebo v skupinkách.
Boa constrictor je teda impozantný a prekrásny had, nie je však určite vhodný pre každého, jeho rozmery a apetít dajú zabrať aj skúsenejším chovateľom. Ak však máte možnosť si toto zviera zaobstarať a ste si istý že sa oň dokážete dostatočne postarať určite bude obohatením pre Váš chov.

Boa constrictor is one of the bigger snakes in private collections. They come from Amerika, where they are o be found from the south of North Amerika, across South Amerika up to some Caribean islands. Depending on the locality where they come from they differ in coloration and size. The final size of these snakes depends on the amount of feeding and partialy also from the fact if you have a male or a female, females tend to get bigger. Adults can get between two and four meters long. This fact means, that before you buy a snake of this species you need to think twice if you will be able to take care of the animal properly either in the form of proper size terrarium and in the form of sufficient amount and quality of food. These snakes are very greedy eaters and already as babies they are able to eat adult mice, later on they move on to rats and adutl rabbits. Due to their tendency to obesity it is importantto be smart and not to overfeed them.
The n atural coloration is grey and bwon with a lot of rectangular marks on the back and very intensive patern on the tail where the color goes up to the red range. Again we want to point out that the color is variable depending on the locality. In collections you can find not only natural colored animlas but also "paint jobs". These are animals breed in regard of their genetics to achieve a concrete coloration. This way there are albino, motley, pastel, salmon, jungle, sunset, anery, stripe, arabesque, panther, superforms of these, their combinations and new forms are being created, a good examle is the form midnight gin which has been produced by VPI. It could be said that fantasy does not know borders in this direction. Of course it is a question of preferency if you decide to get a naturaly colored animal or you get paint jobed snake, these are more expensive.
In regard of their personality, well it is quite difficult to make a common statement. Therefore we rather describe our experiences which we have made with our animals. All Boa constrictor in our collection are really piecefull and tame, they can be handled without any issues, this is very benefitial when you want to clean the enclosure. The only exception is the feeding time, as soon as the feeding animals are in the snake room the snakes are avare of them and from this point on you need to be carefull when opening a cage as they will strike at almost anything what moves near them, they even strike outside of the terrarium. At feeding time be carefull and don't underestimate their speed. We feed our snakes once a week.
They have live jung, which means that the whole incubation process occurs within the females body and she gives birth afterwards. The mating can be seen multiple times during the time the couple is together. The gravidity lasts for 100 - 120 days, then the female gives birth to approximately 50 babies. The babies can be kept separetly or together ion groups.
Boa constrictor is an beautifull impresive snake, it is not suited for everyone, it's size and apetite are a challange also for more experienced keepers. If you can get one of these animals and are sure to be able to take good care of it, it is for sure an enrichment for your collection.
