Bothrochilus boa patrí napriek svojmu latinskemu nazvu k pytónom. Predstavuje unikátne zviera ktoré je endemickým druhom Bismarckských ostrovov, teda v prírode sa nikde inde nevyskytuje. Sfarbenie mláďat je kombinácia čiernych a až neónovo oranžových pruhov. Hlava je pritom čierna a nápadne pripomína druh Aspidites melanocephalus. Toto sfarbenie pravdepodobne slúži na zastrašenie predátorov. Občas sa objavujú aj jedince s neúplnou kresbou ale hady takmer celé oranžové, tu chceme upozornit na zmenu farby, pretože práve oranžová časť sa zmení. Časom ako had rastie, sa sfarbenie pozvoľna začína meniť a oranžové pruhy sa pomaly prefarbia na zlatohnedé, niektoré dokonca až takmer na čierno. Je nutné si tento fakt uvedomiť ešte pred zakúpením zvierat aby nedošlo k zbytočnému sklamaniu. Podľa nás sú tieto hady nádherné aj po prefarbení. Majú zavalité telo a časom dosiahnu úctyhodnú veľlkosť okolo 150 - 200 cm. Je preto potrebné brať do úvahy aj tento fakt. Obľubujú možnosti na lezenie a pomerne veľa času trávia aj vo vode.

Povahovo sa jedná a pomerne nervózne hady, už od mladosti neváhaju uhryznúť, toto správanie však rokmi oslabuje a veľké jedince sú známe svojím pokojom, toto zatiaľ nevieme potvrdiť, ale to že sú hady pokojnešie ako keď boli mláďatá je evidentné. Naše mláďatá boli od samého začiatku veľmi žravé a bez akýchkoľvek problémov prijímali myšie holíčatá, dobrým pravidelným kŕmením sa dopracovali postupne až ku potkanom, tie podávame raz za týždeň mŕtve rozmrazané.

Pozor, tento had je kanibal a teda existuje vysoké riziko, ža ak ich chováte spoločne v jednom teráriu, nájdete len jedného spokojného hada. Odporúča sa chov jednotlivo, aj keď niektorí chovatelia zaznamenali úspechy aj so skupinovým chovom. Samica kladie vajcia, ktoré je následne potrebné inkubovať.

Mi naše jedince pripúšťame k sebe tento rok po prvý krát. Spočiatku sa jeden druhému intenzívne vyhýbali a každý sa stiahol do jedného kúta terária. Po necelom dni si podľa všetkého na seba zvykli a trávia celý deň spoločne na vyvýšenom mieste prepletení. Momentálne sú naše hady viac než tri roky staré a teda dúfame v prvé úspechy s rozmnožovaním a odchovom, samozrejme o celom priebehu Vás budeme informovať na našej stránke.

Celkovo sa dá povedať že sa jedná o na chov nenáročného hada, ktorý presvedčí jednak svojím krásnym sfarbením,  eleganciou a v neposlednom rade aj veľkosťou, ktorá ho radí medzi stredne veľké hady. V prípade záujmu ich však určite nezoženiete ľahko, stojí to však za tú námahu a obohatíte si svoj chov o zaujímavý a zriedkavý druh.

Despite it's name, the Bothrochilus boa is a python. It is a unique animal which ius endemic to the Bismarck islands, which means you won't be able to find it else where in the free nature. The coloration of the babies is a combination of black and almost neon orange rings. The head is black and similar to the species Aspidites melanocephalus. This coloration is probably usefull to discourage predators. Sometimes there are also speciments with incomplete rings or some which are fully orange, here we would like to focus the fact fo changing colors, as the orange part is the one which will change. With time as the snake grows,  the coloration starts to slowly change and the orange rings will recolor to a goldishbrown, some will fade out and become almost completly black. It is important to keep this in mind before you buy an animal so you are not diapointed later on. We believe these snakes to be really beautifull even after the recoloration happens. The have a strong body and grow the size of 150 - 200 cm. It is neccessary to not to forget the size they will once become. They love to climb and also spend a lot of time in water.

The behaviour of these snakes is, midly expressed, nervous, already when they are babies they don't really hesitate to bite, they become more calm as they grow and adults are to be known as piecefull, well this we can not confirm yet, but it is for sure that they are more tame in comaprison to when they were babies. OUr babies were from the start on very greedy eaters and accepted pinkie mice imediately, with regular feeding they have worked they way up to rats, which we feed frozen once a week. 

Care is adviced, as these snakes are canibalistic the risk is high, that when you keep them together, you could find only one very satisfied snake. It is recomended to keep them separetly, some keepers have been also successfull keeping them in groups. The females lay eggs which need to be incubated.

Our animals have been introduce to each other the first time this year. At the beginingthey avoided each other and got into the oposite corners of the terrarium. After not even a day they adjusted and now they are spending the whole day together curled up in a higher spot of the enclosure. At this time our snakes are more then three years old and so we hope for first successfull breeding, of course we will inform you on our page. 

As a summary we can say that the Bothrochilus boa is a uncompleted snake, which can convince everyone with it's beautifull coloration,  elegancy and last but not least with it's size, which makes them a midd size snake. In case of interest you won't be able to find them easily, but believe us it is worth the strugle as you will get a unique and interesting species into your collection.
